MSC Professional Learning Courses

For 2021-2022, all MSC professional learning courses are being offered in a hybrid professional learning format, blending some face-to-face sessions at the AIU with some virtual synchronous sessions.  A fully virtual option is available for non-local participants.

 

Additionally, there are two fully asynchronous courses available.  See the listings #8 & #9 for complete details.

Grades K-2 Mathematics Institute

Participants will explore the progression of content standards through grades K-2 enabling teachers to address unfinished learning from prior grade levels.  Content focus will include number sense, base ten understanding, addition and subtraction, measurement including length, time and money as well as shapes and spatial reasoning.

*Attention CSI/ATSI Schools: 
The Grades K-2 Mathematics Institute from MSC qualifies as an evidence-based strategy for mathematics on the PA Evidence Resource Center.

Grades 3-5 Mathematics Institute

Participants will explore the progression of content standards through grades 3-5 enabling teachers to address unfinished learning from prior grade levels. Content focus will include base ten understanding, whole number operations with special focus on division, understanding of fractions as numbers, fraction operations, and measurement including area, perimeter, volume.

Grades 6-8/Algebra I Mathematics Institute

Participants will explore the progression of content standards through grades 6-8 and Algebra I enabling teachers to address unfinished learning from prior grade levels. Content focus will include ratio and proportional reasoning, algebraic reasoning, data analysis and statistics.

Accelerating Number Sense through Routines and Games in Grades K-2

Are you concerned your K-2 students may have missed the opportunity to build true number sense through the challenging circumstances last year? Teaching from a textbook alone makes it very difficult to develop this firm foundation as well as address any unfinished learning. Participants will be introduced to routines including quick images and number talks as well as content-based games to help accelerate learning.

Accelerating the Teaching and Learning of Fractions in Grades 3-5

Do you see evidence that your students have incomplete understandings of fractions? Students might need different experiences with fractions than what they have recently had. Participants in this session will engage in activities designed to expand current perspectives and pedagogies around fraction understanding and fraction instruction in the elementary grades.

Accelerating the Teaching and Learning of Problem Solving through Open-Ended Math Tasks in

Grades 3-8 and Algebra 1

Are your students struggling with solving open-ended mathematics items? To “flip the switch” on students’ problem solving skills, 3 Act Tasks will be introduced. Strategies will be explored to support students’ comprehension of word problems. Techniques will be highlighted to improve students’ spoken and written math explanations.

Learn about the 90-Minute Mathematics Block in 90 minutes of your time

AIU MSC will provide a model for educators to implement a 90 minute block of effective math instruction to accelerate learning and mitigate unfinished learning. This session is appropriate for teachers, coaches, and administrators.
